Web Space
Creating websites and web pages Web pages are created with an HTML editor. These programs are fairly easy to use, often not much different than using a standard word processor. You may have an HTML editor and not realize it. Some versions of Netscape come with Netscape Composer, which is a simple HTML editor. If you do not have Netscape Composer, you can download a copy of the latest version of Netscape for free. You can also download other HTML editors from the Internet. A great Web site for software downloads is Tucows. Just scroll to the bottom of the Tucows home page, type "html editor" in the Search field, and you will see a long list of products. Most of the software available for download is either "freeware" (totally free) or "shareware" (available for a small fee). How much web space do I have? You have 10 MBs (10,000 KBs) of space as part of your coffeyvilleks.net service. This is enough for several pages. Pages that are all text are only a few KBs. A picture should be less than 100 KBs—much larger than that, and it will be slow to download. If your average page has text and a few pictures or graphics, you should be able to fit 50 or more pages on your website. What's the best way to organize a personal website? Rather than one long page, it's best to organize a website into several shorter pages with links to the various pages. How should the pages (files) be named? Your Home page must be named index.html. This is file name the server looks for when someone types in your Web address. Other than that, you name your files as you wish, although descriptive file names will help you later. For example, pictures.html is better than page1.html. Most HTML editors add either the .html or .htm extension automatically, which are interchangeable. After the files have been created, how do I get them into my Web space? You will need something called an FTP program to "upload" or transfer the HTML files from your local hard drive to our Web server. There is an excellent FTP product called WS_FTP, and it is free for personal use. You can download WS_FTP from Ipswitch or TUCOWS. Another excellent FTP program is CuteFTP. Once you have an FTP program, you can use it to transfer your files to our server at ftp.coffeyvilleks.net. Use your email User ID and Password when transferring files. Place your Web files in the html directory. What will the website address be? Your Web page address is http://www.coffeyvilleks.net/~username, where "username" is the login name of your main email address. The ~ character can be found above the TAB key on most keyboards.
